The critical care forum of Sri Lanka was started in 2009 during an era when critical care was not even a specialty. It was founded as a concept by Dr. Aruna Munasinghe to meet the challenge of establishing critical care in an environment where the value of the concepts was not understood or ignored. Since then critical care forum of Sri Lanka contributed much towards developing formal education of critical care in Sri Lanka.
Among many other achievements, it is the critical care forum that was responsible for introducing lung ultrasound with point-of-care sonography and formal education in respiratory mechanics. It is the only organization with a peer-reviewed journal “The Sri Lankan Hospitalist”. The landmark achievement of the Forum is the establishment of Emergency medicine and Critical Care as recognized specialties in the Ministry of Health, with the support of a few other organizations. It is also a main stakeholder in developing Accident and Emergency National Policy in Sri Lanka.
